This is a beautiful sandy beach with caves carved inside the rocks. Although the caves used to be tombs of the Roman era, they were later turned into shelters for the “Flower Children” (aka as Hippies) and became very famous during the 60s. They are very well-known and visited by many people until nowadays even though accommodation in them is no longer allowed. Matala is located south of the prefecture Heraklion, in the valley of Messaras. The waters are crystal-clear and deep but the sea can be a bit wavy at times. The beach is organized with umbrellas, sun beds and a shower area. Also, Beach volley competitions take place on the beach during the summer months.
