Kyra Leoussi is believed to have been built during the Byzantine times. It was probably the first metropolis that housed the painting of the Virgin. The temple hosts interesting paintings of the Cretan School with the one of Mary Glikofilousa being the principal painting. Another interesting temple is the temple of St. Constantine which was flooded with water for many years so its frescoes have been destroyed. Below the castle you will find St. John the Theologian. These churches and more like them (30 in total) are locked and thus, not accessible to the public. The keys belong to the families that clean and light the candles inside the churches.
