The Monastery, located in the center of the island, is the oldest monastery of Aegina. According to local tradition, it was built in the Middle Ages, when the original monastery of the Virgin Mary (in the area Leonti Kypseli) was destroyed by pirates and the monks had to carry the painting of the Virgin in the mountains. The monastery is not visible from the coast of the island. One of the most impressive sights (dating back to 1610) is the tall tower that rises in the center of the monastery and the old wooden carved iconostasis in the katholicon. Although for centuries the monastery was male only, it was turned into a nunnery in 1935.
