The Cave of the Nymphs is located southeast of Kamares village, in Korakies location. It is approximately 10 meters deep and there is a natural small basin, which was probably used to gather water. This water resulted in a little torrent which flowed to Livadas. On the left of the entrance there is an inscription on the rock: Sanctum of the Nymphs. The inscription is written in the Ionic dialect which proves that the cave was a worship place in the late 6th or early 5th century B.C.
The Nymphs were creatures of nature and water was their favorite element. In their sanctuary, they were worshipped as demons of nature and animal protectors. Their faithful pilgrims were probably shepherds, hunters and farmers. The absence of votive vases or figurines reveals a particular manner of worship, which relates mainly to a prayer and bloody or bloodless animal offerings.
