The hermitages of Patmos are also known as “kathismata” (=”seats” in Greek). The cells were established by monks inside caves and they were usually depending on the Monastery of St. John the Theologian. Kalikatsou, the most ancient hermitage, is located at Petra (=”rock” in Greek). In the "seat" of Apollo (a person of the New Testament, fiery preacher of the Gospel) there is a windmill, a threshing floor and a well. Today many of the cells are restored and have become extensions of the auxiliary buildings beside them.
Some of the oldest hermitages are located next to the Holy Monastery of Agioi Assomati, at the Saint’s Gardens (Agioi Anargyroi), at the Church of Annunciation, at Loukakia and at the Church of Prophet Elijah.
The majority of the cells are locked. For further information, you can contact the secretary of the Monastery at 22470 20800.
